Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia, the most western province in Canada.

The city sits on Vancouver Island with the Pacific Ocean to the West, and enjoys Canada's warmest climate. In Victoria's scenic Inner Harbour you can enjoying kayaking and if you take a boat-ride further into the waters beyond you may be fortunate enough to spot whales surfacing.

Victoria is one of Canada's most historic cities and our centre is located in an heritage building. Inside you’ll find all the excellent modern teaching facilities you’d expect from a year-round Embassy CES Study Centre.

Accommodation

Homestay (host family):

Live with a host family in Victoria. Learn about the local way of life. Living with English-speakers means that you're language will continuously improve during your stay.

All of our host families are monitored and vetted and most live within one hour of the school. Usually you have a single room, and shared bathroom. Breakfast and evening meals will be provided by the family and lunch will be taken at the centre. Packed lunches will be provided for any trips. The family will also provide laundry service.

Facilities

  • Classrooms: Lessons take place in modern well-equipped classrooms in the main school building.
  • Sports: All summer school sports take place at the nearby park.
  • Common room: Student lounge with kitchen area.
  • Email & Internet:There is wireless internet and also a computer room available to use free of charge.

Daytime activities

  • Sports: Soccer, Tennis and hiking trails.

  • Visits are organised daily
  • Excursions usually provided by a private transport company.
  • Students will need to purchase a local travel card.

  • Parliament Buildings: Victoria's premier landmark.
  • Market Square shopping: Enjoy shops restaurants and clubs in this historic marketplace.
  • Thetis Lakes: Canada's first nature sanctuary is rumoured to be home to the mythological Lake Thetis Monster!
  • Royal British Columbia Museum: Natural history and human history museum
  • Beacon Hill Park: A beautifully landscaped park and gardens.
  • China Town: Enjoy shops and restaurants in the historic China Town area.
  • Centennial Square: See events and concerts.
  • Miniature World: A curious museum full of everything small-scale.

Examples of typical optional excursions:

  • Vancouver (overnight trip): A sophisticated city described as Manhattan with mountains.
  • Butchart Gardens: Five acres of floral displays a national historic site.
  • Craigdarroch Castle: Built by a Scottish immigrant in the 19th Century this is a must-see historic attraction.
  • Whale watching: Take a boat to spot Orca (killer whales) in the Juan de Fuca straits.
  • Kayaking: Explore Victoria's Inner Harbour.
